Meta catalog ads: manage products, product sets and headline variations without leaving the editor
By Matheus Mello, founder of Ads Editor and owner of YEP Agência · Published · 10 min read
Meta catalog ads show products from a catalog instead of a single fixed creative, and most of the work happens before the ad exists: adding products, building product sets and keeping media and links up to date. Since October 30, 2026, Ads Editor handles that catalog work inside its editor, in bulk and with video. The same release added headline variations to regular ads: up to 5 headlines in one ad.
Quick answer
Meta catalog ads display products from a catalog through a product set. In Ads Editor, the Catalog Ad tab creates and edits products and product sets, in bulk and with video, then publishes the ad. To compare angles inside one ad, add headline variations: up to 5 headlines of up to 255 characters each.
Summary
- A catalog ad pulls its products from a product set, which is a slice of the catalog.
- In the Ads Editor editor you create and edit products and product sets; each product takes an image or a video.
- With "A new set for each media file", every photo or video becomes a product, its own product set and a catalog ad.
- Bulk create and bulk edit: up to 20 files per upload, swap media and links, rename with a prefix, a suffix or find and replace.
- Headline variations: up to 5 headlines of up to 255 characters in the same ad, outside carousels.
- Before you start, reconnect your profile under Connect Meta and grant catalog access.

What are Meta catalog ads?
A catalog ad shows products from a Meta product catalog instead of one fixed image or video. Meta describes the catalog as the place where you store product information and upload your inventory, and uses it in Advantage+ catalog ads, which show items tailored to each person.
The ad does not point at the whole catalog. It points at a product set, a slice of the catalog (every sneaker, one brand, or a single item). So the real question for a media buyer is rarely "how do I build the ad". It is "which products go into which set, with which photo, video and link".
What is the difference between a catalog, a product set and a catalog ad?
| Piece | What it is | Where it usually breaks |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog | The product records: name, price, brand, link, image and video. | A product without an image, a wrong link, or a store feed that overwrites your edit. |
| Product set | A slice of the catalog, built by picking products or by a rule. | Meta rejects an empty set: the product has to exist first. |
| Catalog ad | The ad that shows the products of one product set. | The wrong set in the ad publishes other products and nobody notices. |
What changes with the catalog inside Ads Editor?
Until now, media buyers jumped between Ads Manager and Commerce Manager to add a product, build a set and only then create the ad. Since October 30, 2026, the Ads Editor editor (/editor) has a Catalog Ad tab with a Manage products and sets button that does all of it in one place:
- Products: create and edit name, description, price, brand, link and media. Each product takes an image (JPG or PNG, up to 8 MB) or a video (MP4 or MOV, up to 95 MB).
- Product sets: create a set by picking 1 to 100 products, and rename sets. A rule-based set (brand, type, label) keeps its rule: Ads Editor never swaps a rule for a fixed list unless you ask.
- Use in ad: the chosen set goes back to the ad you were building, without wiping what you had already configured.
Changing a product changes every ad that uses it
Image, video and link belong to the product, not to the ad. Swapping a product photo changes what every set and ad using that product shows. And if your store sends an automatic feed to the catalog (Shopify, WooCommerce and others), the next sync can overwrite a manual edit.
How do you create a catalog ad in Ads Editor?
- Reconnect your Meta profile. Under Connect Meta, reconnect the profile and grant catalog access (a one-time step, explained below).
- Open the editor and pick the Catalog Ad tab. Select the ad account and the campaigns. In a catalog campaign the catalog is already fixed: it is the campaign's own.
- Choose where the products come from. Use an existing product set or the A new set for each media file option.
- Adjust products if needed. Under Manage products and sets, create or edit products and sets and click Use in ad.
- Publish. The catalog ad is created in every ad set you selected. Publishing stays a separate action from managing the catalog.
How do you turn each photo or video into its own catalog ad?
This is for teams with a batch of creatives that should each run as their own product, with separate reporting. With A new set for each media file, every photo or video becomes a catalog product, in a product set of its own, and a catalog ad in each ad set you selected.
- Choose the catalog (in a catalog campaign, the campaign's own).
- Select up to 20 photos or videos. A video also gets a thumbnail, because a Meta product always needs an image.
- Name each product and fill in link, price and brand, which apply to every file in the upload.
- Send it and follow file by file: the media uploads, Meta processes the product, the set is created and the ad goes to each ad set.
The ad stays tied to that file's new set. If Meta rejects it, Meta's own message shows in the result, instead of the ad going out with a different product set.
Example: eight videos of the same product
A store has eight short videos of the same sneaker, shot by different creators. With one set per media file, each video becomes its own product and product set, with a catalog ad in every ad set. When a video needs to be paused or replaced, you touch only that product.
If you want to launch the same creatives as regular ads rather than catalog ads, use bulk upload in the editor.
How do you create and edit catalog products in bulk?
Bulk create
Under Manage products and sets, the Bulk create sets button takes up to 20 photos or videos. Each file becomes a product in a product set of its own, without publishing an ad. The table has one row per file, with a thumbnail and:
- Name, taken from the file name and editable;
- Link, price and brand per row;
- Defaults with "Apply to all": an empty row uses the default;
- Progress and errors per row, with "Stop" and "Retry failed", which resends only what failed.
Bulk edit
Tick several products (or use "Select all" on the search results) and click Edit selected. For product sets, use Bulk edit sets. The actions are:
- Swap image or video: the same media for all, or one per item, matched by file name or by order, with a preview of the matching before you apply it;
- Change the destination link;
- Rename: add a prefix, add a suffix or find and replace, with a preview of the new names.
On a set, media and link apply to every product in each selected set; renaming changes only the set name. The confirmation shows how many items will change and, for media and links, reminds you that every ad of that product will show the change. Up to 100 items at a time.
What are headline variations in an ad?
A headline variation means writing more than one headline for the same ad and letting Meta choose which one to show. In the editor, right below the primary text, the Add headline variation button adds up to 4 headlines on top of the main one: 5 in total, up to 255 characters each. They work alongside text variations, which already existed (up to 5 primary texts in the same ad).
On Meta's side, these options live in the same ad, in the creative field that groups several texts and headlines and delivers different combinations to different people. That is not the same as Advantage+ creative enhancements, which can change the creative on their own. If you are weighing this against the flexible format, see what the flexible ad format is and when to avoid it.
When should you use headline variations and when separate ads?
- Use variations when the headlines are alternatives for the same offer and you accept that Meta splits delivery between them.
- Split into separate ads when you need a clean read on each headline, for example to report the result to a client.
- Not for carousels: there the headline belongs to each card. The button disappears while carousel is on.
Variations are not a controlled test
With several headlines in one ad, Meta decides how often each one shows. That keeps you from depending on a single angle, but it does not give each version equal delivery. Compare delivery and date range before you call a winner. For a clean test, see creative testing on Facebook ads.
Can you do this through Copilot or MCP?
Yes. The Ads Editor Copilot and the MCP server (Claude, ChatGPT and other clients) do through chat what the screen does: list catalogs, create and edit products and product sets, create catalog ads and launch ads with headline variations. Example requests:
- "Create a product set with the SKUs from the summer collection and publish a catalog ad in every ad set of campaign X."
- "Launch this ad testing three headlines: the main one plus these two."
- "Swap the photo of the Blue T-shirt product for this image" (with a public link to the image).
Files on your computer go in through the editor; in chat, media goes in by public link. How to connect your AI: Ads Editor MCP in Claude and ChatGPT.
What do you need to grant before using it?
Catalog management uses Meta's catalog_management permission, which lets an app create, read, update and delete product catalogs of the businesses where the user is an admin. Meta approved this permission for Ads Editor, but it only grants it to a profile when the profile is connected again.
- Open Connect Meta in Ads Editor.
- Reconnect the profile and, on Meta's screen, grant catalog access.
- Go back to the editor: without the permission, the catalog list shows as partial and the screen asks you to reconnect.
On a team, a member works only in the business of the ad accounts shared with them: the full catalog list of the profile stays with the owner.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a product set in Meta Ads?
Add the products to the catalog first, because Meta rejects an empty set. Then pick the products or define a rule; in Ads Editor this is under Manage products and sets, in the editor's Catalog Ad tab.
Can a catalog product have a video?
Yes. In Ads Editor each product takes an image or a video, and the video also generates the cover image Meta requires on the product.
How many headlines can I test in the same ad?
Up to 5: the main headline plus 4 variations, up to 255 characters each. The option does not apply to carousels.
Why does my catalog list look incomplete?
Usually because the profile was connected before the catalog permission existed. Reconnect under Connect Meta and grant catalog access.
Does editing a product image change ads that are already running?
Yes. The media belongs to the product, so it changes in every set and ad using that product. A store feed can overwrite the edit on its next sync.
